Halloween Witch Cookies

Halloween Witch Cookies are great for an afternoon pick-me-up or you can take them to school for class parties. There is plenty to go around.

Halloween Witch Cookies

This week I decided to surprise the kids by making these Halloween Witch Cookies a week before Halloween. Next week we will be out of town traveling, so I’m using that excuse to treat them now. We will be back at home in time for Halloween but who doesn’t love cookies any day or time?

Halloween Witch Cookies

Baking to me is very therapeutic — if everything turns out in the recipe and the photos look good. I was even able to make 36 witch cookies without licking the bowl or icing once. Not even tempted. Yes, I’m still on my low carb diet and unfortunately cookies especially sugar ones are not on my plan. It was still fun making them and enjoying the fresh cookie smell in the kitchen once they were complete. I guess I don’t need the sugar cookie candle after all.

The kids enjoyed eating and making these cookies with their mom. You can switch up the hat colors and add your favorite Hershey kisses flavor.

Yield: 36 cookies
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 9 minutes
Total Time: 19 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 cup salted butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 36 Hershey kisses
  • buttercream icing of your choice

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. In a small bowl combine the first four ingredients and mix.  In a large bowl combine the butter and sugar and whisk until creamy about 5 minutes. Beat the egg into the sugar/butter mixture and then add vanilla. Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture and then the milk. Scoop up the dough mixture with an ice cream scoop or spoon. Roll it around in the palm of your hands and then flatten just a bit. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper about 1 inch apart. Bake in the oven for  9-10 minutes and then remove to cool. After cookies are cool add a dollop of buttercream icing to the center. Using a Hershey kiss mash down slightly on the buttercream icing to create the witches hat cookie.
