Italian Stromboli

Italian Stromboli

Oh my stars….. I am sharing a truly delicious recipe with you today!

No seriously I wish there were more of this to eat in the house. I’m seriously contemplating making another one just like this or a different version.

I remember taking a food class in High School and we would make huge batches of Stromboli. We would make it with sliced cheese and ham. I asked Shaun if that’s what he wanted in his Stromboli and he immediately replied I want Italian sausage. Ok looks like I would be taking a different approach then what I already had in mind.Good thing I went with his idea because it was totally scrumptious.

The best part of Italian Stromboli is that you can add whatever ingredients you like! I made the dough from a pizza dough recipe that I found on Pinterest. The only thing I changed was the Italian seasoning and I made into one large dough ball instead of making two small portions.

ENJOY!

Yield: 3-4 servings

Ingredients

FOR THE DOUGH

  • 250g flour
  • 160g water
  • 1 tsp dried yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp Italian Seasoning

FOR THE FILLING

  • 3/4 cup pizza sauce
  • 1 lb. Italian sausage
  • 8 slices mozzarella cheese
  • 1 4.5 oz can olives, sliced and drained
  • olive oil

Instructions

FOR THE DOUGH
In a large bowl combine the flour, water, yeast, salt and italian seasoning. Mix with your hands forming a ball. Start to knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes. Place back in a lightly oiled bowl and then cover for at least an hour.
Remove the dough and place on a lightly floured surface. Start to stretch the dough with hands into a rectangular shape.

FOR THE FILLING
Preheat oven to 400 degrees and place pizza stone on the bottom.
Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the italian sausage. Brown the sausage and remove any grease from the pan.
Spread the pizza sauce over the dough leaving 1/2″ to 1″ uncovered. Finish with the sausage, cheese and olives. Using a brush cover the edges around the pizza with olive oil.
Start to roll up the dough very slowly and then pinch the ends to ensure it is well sealed. Brush the top and ends with olive oil and place on pizza stone.
Using a knife score the top of the rolled up dough to allow steam out of the stromboli.
Cook for 20-25 minutes.

*If you don’t have pizza stone you can use baking sheet but put the sheet in the middle of the rack*
