I am always in the mood for pizza especially if you can make it the way you want it.  This recipe is relatively simple since the only thing you have to make is the sauce.  A lot of people are not aware that local pizzerias will let you have fresh pizza dough for a cheap price. (Just call and ask) If you are not able to get dough from a pizzeria you can always get pizza dough (pillsbury) from your local grocery store.  ENJOY!!!

Deep Dish Margherita Pizza

Ingredients:
Lg wheat pizza dough
1/2 cup fresh basil leaves
5 oz. sliced fresh mozzarella cheese
2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
4 garlic cloves, minced
28 oz. can San Marzano tomatoes, drained reserve 1/4 cup for sauce
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp dried oregano

Preparation:
Preheat oven to 450 degrees
Place dough in round 2-3 inch deep pan – i used baking stone
Cut off any extra pieces of the dough that hang over the top with a knife
Place tomatoes in a food processor and crush
In medium saucepan heat the oil over medium heat; add garlic and stir
Add tomatoes, salt and oregano to the saucepan
Add about 1/4 cup of tomato juice that was drained to the saucepan; bring to a boil
Reduce to a low heat and simmer for 35 minutes or until sauce thickens; stir occasionally
Spread sauce on the top of the dough, you may not use it all
Top it off with mozzarella cheese
Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown
Sprinkle basil on top and serve

Gorgeous pie! The oozing cheese, the gloriously green basil leaves and vibrant red tomatoes atop a whole wheat crust… Utterly divine.

I have to say, I really do consider myself more of a thin-crust kinda gal (being both an Italian and a New Yorker) HOWEVER, I think you may have swayed me with this post! This looks divine, and I LOVE that you call for San Marzano tomatoes -yum!

you can also get pizza dough in little sacks at Trader Joe’s. Totally recommend it!! This looks fantastic. I don’t think I’ve ever seen margherita deep dish, but that would definitely be my choice!

This looks amazing! A great trick of mine for pizza dough if you’re in a pinch…You can use the white bread dough that you get in the freezer section of the super market as pizza dough. Seriously!

My BF and I do not see eye to eye on pizza. I like different pizzas for different times. He likes the same pizza, from the same place, every. single. time. I love a deep dish pizza but never get it any more. If I make it though, he can’t stop me!

Mmmmmmmm, I adore pizza alla Margherita so very much. Deep dish sounds even better. I need to see if I have any basil lying around. :)
