Substitutes for Chocolate Graham Crackers

I always made dirt cups with Oreos, but for this recipe, all I had on hand were chocolate graham crackers – and I was pleasantly surprised by the result! Chocolate graham crackers are easy to crumble and give just the right “dirt” texture, but really any chocolate cookie will do. If it crumbles, you can create your dirt with it.

Chocolate Pudding Options

I use two snack pudding cups for the chocolate pudding in this recipe because they make these dirt cups practically effortless. Feel free to substitute these for any chocolate pudding – instant, homemade, or otherwise. Or for a unique and decadent treat, substitute the pudding with a chocolate hazelnut spread like Nutella.

Green Topping Options

This dirt cups recipe wouldn’t be complete without some green icing as “grass” for your bunny to sit in. Homemade icing is simple to make, so I made my own for this recipe. You can use ready-made icing if you’d like.

In place of icing, you can also use green-dyed shredded coconut for an even more realistic grass look.

More Dirt Cup Topping Ideas

The bunny Peeps are the perfect touch for a spring or Easter-themed event. You can also use little chick Peeps. I like to add in a few speckled robin egg candies or jellybeans for an extra cute touch. Feel free to get creative and decorate with white chocolate bunnies or any favorite Easter candy you love.

Make a Dirt Cake

Normally, you layer your dirt cup ingredients in a plastic cocktail cup for adorable, single-serve snacks. But you can also double or triple the recipe and layer it in a cake pan or glass bakeware. Simply spoon out into a dish to serve.

 

How far in advance can you make your dirt cups?

You can make the dirt part of your cups ahead of time and have the kids assemble the toppings themselves later.

Keep in mind, the “dirt” will soften once it’s mixed in with the pudding, so I recommend only making them a few hours ahead at most and storing them in fridge until you’re ready to decorate them.
